Knee Surgery Isn’t Your Only Option: What You Need to Know First
Have you been told you need knee surgery? Maybe a total replacement, a “clean out,” or even another injection?
Before you make that decision—let’s slow things down.
Hi, I’m Dr. Chris Cameron from Cameron Family Chiropractic in Lucan, Ontario. I’ve spent over 25 years helping people with chronic knee pain find real relief using natural, non-surgical solutions. And I want you to know something important:
You may not need surgery at all.
In fact, for many people with knee arthritis or ongoing knee pain, surgery is not the best first step. In this post, I’ll walk you through the research, explain your options, and show you how our WalkStrong Framework is helping people avoid the OR—and walk pain-free again.
What the Research Really Says About Arthroscopic Surgery
Let’s start with one of the most common procedures offered to people with knee arthritis: arthroscopic surgery, also known as a “clean out.”
It sounds simple and helpful—but the research tells a different story.
A major study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that arthroscopic surgery offered no better results than a placebo (or fake) surgery when it came to pain or function. That’s right—patients who didn’t actually have their knees cleaned out felt just as good as those who did.
The Reality of Total Knee Replacement
Now, total knee replacement surgery is a different story—and for some people, it can be life-changing. But for many others, the results fall short.
Let’s look at the data:
1 in 5 patients report dissatisfaction after surgery
10% of knee replacements need to be redone within 10 years—often sooner if you’re under 60
Recovery can be long and difficult, with risks like infections, blood clots, and lingering stiffness
And most importantly—once it’s done, there’s no going back
So before you say yes, it’s okay to ask: Is surgery really the best option for me? Or just the next step in a series of temporary fixes?
Injections: Temporary Relief, Not Long-Term Healing
What about cortisone shots, hyaluronic acid (gel injections), or PRP?
- Cortisone may reduce pain short-term, but repeated use can damage your cartilage and speed up degeneration.
- Gel injections are hit-or-miss. Some people feel a little better, others notice no difference—and studies show they perform about the same as a placebo.
- PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is a more natural option with promising results in some cases—but it still varies greatly depending on how it’s prepared and delivered.
The bottom line? None of these fix the root issue. They may buy you time—but they won’t help your knees heal and function better long-term.
The WalkStrong Framework: A Smarter, Safer Path to Healing
That’s why I created the WalkStrong Framework—a science-backed, non-surgical system that helps your knees heal from the inside out.
This isn’t a “wait and see” plan. It’s a step-by-step approach designed to rebuild the joint and address the true causes of your pain.
Our system includes:
- Laser Therapy – Reduces inflammation and speeds tissue healing
- Knee Decompression – Gently relieves pressure inside the joint and improves circulation
- Shockwave Therapy – Breaks down scar tissue and stimulates regeneration
- Neuromuscular Reeducation – Retrains the muscles and corrects harmful movement patterns
When combined in the right order, these therapies create an environment where healing can happen—without injections, pills, or surgery.
Mike’s Story: Off the Surgery Waitlist and Walking Pain-Free
Mike came to our clinic in his early 60s. He was still active, but knee pain had made even walking his dog a challenge. He was already on the waitlist for knee replacement surgery.
After starting the WalkStrong program, everything changed.
- Within 3 months, Mike was walking 30 minutes a day—without pain
- He took himself off the surgery waitlist
- And he told me:
“I just didn’t know this was even an option.”
You’re Not Broken. You Just Need a Better Plan.
I want to be clear: I’m not anti-surgery. For some people, it’s the right path. But for most people with chronic, non-traumatic knee pain, surgery shouldn’t be the first step—especially if conservative care hasn’t even been tried yet.
So if you’re feeling stuck… If you’ve been told there’s nothing left to try…
You may not need a scalpel—you may just need a smarter plan.
