7 Warning Signs of Peripheral Neuropathy You Should Never Ignore

Have you ever felt a strange tingling in your hands or feet? Maybe a burning sensation or even sharp, electric-like pain? If so, you’re not alone – and you might be experiencing one of the early signs of peripheral neuropathy.

The 7 Warning Signs of Peripheral Neuropathy

Hi, I’m Dr. Chris Cameron, a chiropractor here at Cameron Family Chiropractic in Lucan. I’ve spent over 24 years helping people manage pain and improve their quality of life without surgery or medication.

Today, I want to walk you through seven symptoms of peripheral neuropathy that you should never ignore – because when it comes to nerve damage, early action is key.

1. Numbness or Tingling in Hands and Feet

That “pins and needles” feeling might seem harmless at first. But if it keeps coming back – or worse, sticks around – your nerves could be in trouble. As neuropathy progresses, this sensation often spreads up the limbs and becomes more persistent.

2. Sharp, Burning, or Electric-like Pain

Unlike injury pain, this often shows up suddenly and without warning. Many of my patients describe it as stabbing or like a jolt of electricity. This happens when the damaged nerves start firing off incorrect signals to the brain. It can interfere with sleep, daily tasks, and overall comfort.

3. Muscle Weakness

Struggling to lift, climb stairs, or walk short distances? That could mean your motor nerves – the ones that control movement – are being affected. Weakness and balance issues are serious and should never be brushed off.

4. Poor Balance or Coordination

If you’ve been feeling a little more unsteady on your feet lately, take note. Damaged nerves can’t properly communicate your body’s position in space, making you more prone to trips and falls.

5. Pain from Touch (Allodynia)

If something as simple as a sock or light blanket causes pain, that’s a red flag. This is known as allodynia, where harmless touch becomes painful due to misfiring sensory nerves.

6. “Stocking-Glove” Sensation

This is a classic sign of neuropathy – when it feels like you’re wearing gloves or socks even though you’re not. This can impact your ability to grip or walk and is a result of impaired sensory nerves.

7. Slow-Healing Wounds

Noticing that cuts or blisters – especially on your feet – aren’t healing like they used to? You might not be feeling them properly, which is common in diabetic neuropathy. These can lead to infections if left untreated.

Two Simple Exercises for Relief

If you’re experiencing any of these signs, here are two gentle exercises you can try at home:

Toe Taps for Circulation:

  1. Sit in a chair, feet flat.
  2. Lift your toes (keeping heels on the ground) and tap them up and down 20–30 times per foot.
  3. This is great for improving blood flow.

Finger-to-Thumb Taps:

  1. Spread your fingers out and touch your thumb to each fingertip, one at a time.
  2. Reverse the direction.
  3. Repeat 5–10 times to help with circulation and dexterity.

These are great starter moves, but they’re not a replacement for professional care.
